Is Science Useful?

It can be difficult to answer the question of whether or not science is beneficial. Scientists are urged to pursue their curiosity. However, this could lead to research that focuses on a broad range of subjects, many of which might not be directly beneficial to society. Science is about establishing theories and making predictions which can be verified. These discoveries are utilized to create new technologies, for instance drugs and medical devices.

In order to be considered valuable, science must also address problems and issues that affect the well-being of humans. This requires collaboration with key stakeholders to determine their requirements, set specific goals and then create plans to address those requirements. Many scientific initiatives do not have this collaboration and are focused on expanding knowledge without having a direct connection to society. Additionally, the effects of research are usually not assessed and tracked in an effective manner.

A variety of strategies have been devised to produce usable science which includes the concept of translational ecology (TE) which stresses the necessity for researchers to actively consider and respond to the research context. TE emphasizes the importance of engaging end users in a meaningful way throughout the research process and promoting learning based decision processes that include adaptive management.

Students often have a difficult time to choose a topic which is both interesting as and scholarly, particularly when professors have time limitations. The list of simple research topics in science can help students find an area that will impress their teachers and provide valuable information to the scientific community.
